In an effort to increase public awareness, a community of representatives was present to meet Linda Lingle, Governor of the State of Hawaii, along with Lieutenant Governor James "Duke" Aiona, as she proclaimed May, 2003 Better Speech and Hearing Month.

As read by Governor Lingle from the Proclamation:

WHEREAS, Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate and treat communication disorders for individuals from birth to geriatric ages; and,

WHEREAS, Audiologists evaluate and treat problems with hearing, balance, and hearing aids for individuals from birth to geriatric ages; and,

WHEREAS, both SLPs and Audiologists work in various settings including the Department of Education (DOE), 0-3 programs, non-profit organizations, private practice, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and university clinics.

WHEREAS, the month of May is recognized at Better Speech & Hearing Month and a time to promote the professions of speech-language pathology & audiology, and educate the public about the services provided.
