The National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) for students majoring in the areas of communication sciences and communication disorders, in which speech-language pathology and audiology belong, has been active for more than 30 years. The national (student) organization serves as an intermediary to facilitate effective interaction between undergraduate and graduate student bodies within the educational settings of colleges and universites and the professional members of the discipline's professional association, the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). NSSLHA has member representation on the policymaking body of ASHA as well as on selected committees and boards of ASHA. NSSLHA also has recognized chapters in more than 285 colleges and universities. Local chapters facilitate the dissemination of information to students as well as facilitate the dissemination of information to faculty regarding potential scholarships, awards, and professional opportunities available to students. In particular NSSLHA publishes Contemporary Issues in Communication Science and Disorders (CICSD) and has a Mentoring Program for students that would like to publish. The Editor of CICSD (Dr. Anthony Caruso) matches students with a published author to provide guidance and oversight. Student manuscripts published in CICSD receive a $100 honorarium. For more information on the CICSD Mentoring Program, contact Dr. Anthony Caruso.
Hui Puanaleo (pronounced "who - ee - poo - ana - lay - oh") is the current NSSLHA chapter at the University of Hawaii. Hui Puanaleo is a student run organization for undergraduate and graduate students in speech language pathology and audiology. This organization promotes departmental and community involvement as well as opportunities for national membership and participation.
There are many reasons why all speech pathology and audiology majors should join NSSLHA. Attending meetings and participating in Hui Puanaleo functions such as the Literacy Program, Fundraisers, Beach Bash (2007 photo shown above) and hearing screenings at the Special Olympics (2007 photo shown below) help students learn more about their majors and gives tips on applying to graduate schools. Career advice, professional options, and peer assistance with course scheduling are a few of the services NSSLHA provides for its members. NSSLHA meetings also provide opportunities to meet other students in the major and faculty members who work in the program.
