The
SPCL Conference fieldtrip will take place
Friday afternoon, August 15
Departure
from the conference venue: 12.15
pm
Returning around
6.15 pm
The
first stop is Hawaii's Plantation
Village. Here we’ll have lunch (a Japanese bento,
or boxed lunch) before beginning the tour. Plantation Village
reveals the story of the 400,000 people who came from China,
Portugal, Japan, Puerto Rico, Korea, the Philippines, and
other countries to work on the sugar plantations in Hawai‘i.
It features 30 original and replica buildings, furnished with
items that reflect each ethnic group’s lifestyle from
1900 to the 1930s.
After the tour,
we’ll head for the country -- the North Shore of the
island of O‘ahu. We’ll pass by pineapple and coffee
plantations, and stop at Haleiwa – a small town that
has kept much of its old-time character, and has good shopping
for souvenirs, arts and crafts, clothes, and surfing gear.
The bus will
then go on to the beach at Waimea Bay -- a famous surfing
spot where the waves get up to 10 meters (around 30 feet)
in winter. But in summer, it’s clear and flat, and perfect
for swimming and snorkelling. (Bring your swimming gear!)
Those who’d
rather shop than swim can stay in Haleiwa, and the bus will
pick them up on the way back from Waimea.
Cost:
only $18, including lunch.
(Please indicate if you require vegetarian)
(note:
we’ll be travelling in a yellow school bus.)
