Dr. Linda Patrylak (Assistant Professor) received her PhD from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. During her years at the University of Connecticut, she taught graduate and undergraduate persuasion, communication theory, public speaking and introduction to communication. Her experience teaching public speaking is substantial, spanning many years and multiple universities; she also has extensive experience in the private sector.
Her main area of research and teaching is social influence. Her research interests involve the intersection of message production and message effects. Using information processing theory, Dr. Patrylak has tracked the stages that adults go through in evaluating messages from children. Specifically, her research examines how children’s motivation and ability influence adult attention and comprehension. She has also studied the inferences adults make about children’s personality given the messages the children produce. Dr. Patrylak’s most recent research examines verbal aggressiveness and its relation to communication anxiety and the effect of Imperative Mood Position Statements (IMPS) on attitude polarization.
