Selection Criteria:
- This award recognizes superior endeavors in speech, above and beyond
class assignments and projects. The award will be based on speech
performance(s), service to the department of Speech, and/or active
participation in speech-related activities in the community. The award
will not be granted to a student who has another academic award or
scholarship at UHM that is equal to or superior in value to the Joseph
Fielding Smith Memorial Award.
Eligibility:
- A student is eligible for the Joseph Fielding Smith Memorial
Award if the student is a full-time classified UHM sophomore,
junior, or senior (with one or more semesters remaining at the time
of application) who is a declared major in Speech or a declared major
in Education with a minor (concentration) in Speech. A minimum 3.0
GPA in Speech and a minimum 2.8 GPA overall is required.
Award:
- The award pays one recipient $800.00 for UHM tuition for one semester providing the student is enrolled
full-time in good academic standing, and the funds are available. The Award Committee may decide to pay the winner $800.00 for UHM tuition for two consecutive semesters.
Selection Procedures:
- The Awards Committee of the Department of Speech shall determine
if a nominee meets the basic criteria of academic excellence. Each
nominee who meets the minimum GPA criteria will be asked to complete
and submit a Nominee Information Form (see below). The nominee will then participate
in a 15-20 minute informal interview with the Department of Speech
Awards Committee. The interview will focus on the selection criteria.
Nominees should be prepared to discuss their qualifications for
the award. The committee will determine which nominee(s) best meets
all criteria. In the event the committee determines that no nominee
clearly meets the criteria, no scholarship will be granted for that
year.
