Minoring in Speech

To Become a Speech Minor

In the Fall of 1990, students were able to Minor in Speech. The Speech Minor was designed for students majoring in other academic disciplines wishing to gain a clear understanding of the process of human communication. Speech predominantly is a discipline of systematic, purposeful thinking, and communicating. The Minor emphasizes messages: message processing, relationships, and social influence. It allows the student ample opportunity, both within and outside the classroom, to develop communicative knowledge, understanding, and skills in diverse activities such as interviewing, group discussion, organizational communication, intercultural communication, public speaking, interpersonal communication, conflict management, debate, and performance of literature.

To declare Speech as a minor, please take the following steps:

  1. Become familiar with the selection of classes available in the Speech Minor program by visiting the Course Description web page. You can also learn about all courses offered in the department by referring to the General Catalog.
  2. Make an appointment to see a Speech advisor for assistance in putting your schedule together and completing a "APPLICATION FOR A SPEECH MINOR " form (pdf).
  3. To insure you receive credit for the minor, make an appointment to meet with a Speech Advisor to complete a "Graduation Information Form for Majors and Minors" (completion) form (pdf).
  4. If you would like to receive a Speech Minor certificate of completion from the Department of Speech, submit your request to the Department of Speech Undergraduate Chair during your graduating semester or within a month after graduation. [Note: a student's minor is only indicated on the official transcript and not on the diploma]

Notes.

  1. All courses taken to satisfy the Speech Minor must be for a letter grade of "C" or better.
  2. Only those classes that are 300 and 400 level will count toward your Minor, unless the 200 level class has prerequisites.
     


Requirements for Speech Minor

To complete your minor in Speech, you will need to complete 15 SPEECH credit hours of which 9 are required and 6 are non-introductory electives.

The required courses are:
SP 364 Persuasion
SP 381 Interpersonal Relations

and at least one of the following:
SP 370 Verbal Communication
or
SP 470 Nonverbal Communication

Note: Introductory courses, as well as, SP 399 and 499 do not count toward the minor. Electives must have a prerequisite or be numbered 300 or above and cover a specific content area.

Note: In residence policy: A minumum of 9 credit hours must be taken in the Department of Speech at UHM.
