The Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative supports monitoring and research activities to build capacity to more effectively manage Hawaii’s coral reef ecosystems. HCRI-RP works with researchers from county, state, and federal agencies and private organizations to achieve project goals.
- Through its support of diverse research projects HCRI-RP aims to assess the major threats posed to coral reef ecosystems and advance understanding of biological and physical processes that affect the health of coral reefs.
- Through the results of sponsored projects, HCRI-RP aims to build management capability and provide information for more effective management by providing reports and sponsoring training programs in order to enhance the capacity of resource managers.
- Sponsored projects are being conducted on each of the main Hawaiian islands to provide specific results regarding the current condition of each island’s coral reef habitats.
- HCRI-RP sponsors scientists from a range of specialty fields with interests in Hawaii’s unique coral reef ecosystems.
