The Multicultural Communication Series 2008

The school's inaugural Multicultural Commication Series event, created by faculty members Chuck Wilson and Jessica Garlock Tuiali'i, was a panel discussion on social justice featuring civil rights icon, Minnijean Brown Trickey. The event was held on April 3, 2008, the eve of the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination.

Dr. Brown Trickey was only sixteen years old when she became involved in one of the most pivotal acts of the American Civil Rights Movement. She was one of the “Little Rock Nine;” the first African American students to test the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education declaring that separate but equal was inherently unequal. On September 25, 1957, the students faced down an angry mob and desegregated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
