Admissions Information

For additional academic information consult the current UH Mānoa Catalog. Note that the rules and requirements of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa apply to social work majors and that the special requirements of the School of Social Work must also be observed.

To be considered for admission, the applicant must:

  1. Have been admitted to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa;

  2. Have completed the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa general education core requirements;

  3. Have completed the knowledge-base courses identified by the School of Social Work with a grade of C or better;

  4. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5; and

  5. Provide evidence of motivation for and commitment to social work (e.g., personal, volunteer, and/or social work–related experience).

In addition, the applicant must submit (1) transcripts of all university-level academic work completed, (2) a School of Social Work application, including a narrative based on personal experiences, and (3) three letters of reference. All completed application materials should be sent to:

All application materials are reviewed and evaluated by the school, and applicants are informed by letter of acceptance or denial to the program.

Application Deadlines

The deadlines for submission of applications are as follows:
Fall admission: February 1
Spring (early) admission: October 1

Transfer and Foreign Students

All students transferring to the University from other colleges and universities must first apply for admission to the University by writing to the Mānoa campus Admissions and Records Office before submitting the BSW application materials to the school.

Applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable, nontransferable $50 application fee. Applications submitted without this fee will be returned. The school does not require a separate application fee.

Tuition and Fees

Please refer to the General and Graduate Information Catalog, Outreach College bulletin, or the Office of Admissions and Records for current information on tuition and fees. Tuition and fees are charged according to the number of credit hours carried by the student. For tuition purposes, a full-time undergraduate student is one who is enrolled for 12 or more credit hours.

Partial Advance Tuition Payment

All new, transfer, and returning resident and nonresident classified students are required to make a partial advance tuition payment of $100. Fellowship recipients are not exempt from this payment, if applicable. This partial advance tuition payment is applied at registration time toward tuition for that semester. The payment is nonrefundable and nontransferable if the student does not register (except when the student is denied further registration by the University). Continuing classified students are not required to make the partial advance tuition payment.
