Welcome to The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa
School of Social Work
Message from the Dean
Aloha,
We appreciate your interest in our program. Our School is one of the premier social work programs in the Pacific and Asian Region and in the top tier nationally. We are renowned for our deep understanding of multiculturalism that is derived from living in one of the most culturally diverse places in the world. Our experiences have positioned us in a leadership role as the world moves in our direction.
Our degree programs are also designed to reflect indigenous perspectives, global issues and social change, and methods and practices focusing on Pacific and Asian cultures. We have a highly diverse and award-winning faculty who are excellent instructors, researchers, and practitioners.
We have recently developed a distance education option and now offer an MSW degree opportunity to each of Hawai`i’s neighbor islands. We will seek to expand our offerings to other Pacific/Asian domains and across degree programs. We have established the Center for Training and Evaluation Research of the Pacific (CTERP) which has quickly become a major regional research/program evaluation and training enterprise. The School’s faculty has secured federal funding to develop a national research center focusing on Native Hawaiian elderly.
We have developed strong and trusting collaborative relations with institutions in Japan, China, the Philippines, and Thailand. Formal agreements have allowed us to engage in joint research and program evaluations, faculty and student exchanges, and training.
There is much that is happening at our School of Social Work as we expand and move into areas that are regionally and globally relevant. We hope that our website offers you meaningful information and enhances your interest in our programs.
Mahalo,
Jon K. Matsuoka
Dean
