Although an education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is considered a bargain, it's not necessarily cheap. That's why the Financial Aids Office works diligently to help students finance their years here at UH-Manoa.
The Financial Aids Office offers advice in obtaining scholarships, grants, loans and employment. Financial aid application packets are available at the office. Packets include the basic application form, budgets, types of financial aid and other required documents. Although the priority deadline for applications is March 1 for the following academic year, applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds run out.
The office uses some basic criteria to determine eligibility for aid. They are:
- your family's ability to pay, based upon your family's financial strength as determined on the Financial Aids Form (FAF); and,
- other factors, such as your admission status, citizenship, academic progress, whether you've defaulted on a loan, and for men, registration with the Selective Service.
There are three types of aid available. Gift aid includes federal Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, tuition waivers, and scholarships from private sources.
Loans with low interest rates are also offered. The most common include Perkins, State Higher Education Loans (SHEL), and loans for health care professionals.
Employment funds, through the College Work Study program, are another way to help pay for college. A part-time job on or off campus provides bi-monthly paychecks that are a large part of your aid package.
Counselors are available in the afternoons for student consultations on the financial aid process. Call or visit for an appointment.
The office also has short-term emergency loans available for students. Call for details and eligibility.
