GENERAL RULE:
We are all here to have fun. Competitors must remain courteous at all times during event.
HEATS:
Each surfing heat will last exactly 20 minutes. Competitors may paddle out to line up prior to start. (ie. if your heat is scheduled to start at 9:30 am the Air Horn to start the heat will blow at 9:30 am and the heat will finish exactly 20 min. thereafter)
AIR HORN SIGNALS:
1 Horn Blow: Start of heat
2 Horn Blows: 5 minutes left in heat.
3 Horn Blows: End of heat (stop surfing, paddle in immediately so next heat can begin)
SCORING:
Scores will be on a 1-10 scale for each wave you catch based on
performance (higher difficulty of surfing maneuvers will receive higher score) and
length of ride (longer ridden waves will receive higher score)
Judges will total your 3 highest scores within the 20 minute heat. (This means you need to ride at least 3 waves to maximize your score).
*note: judges have full discretion to determine scores based on performance and length of ride.
DROPPING IN NOT ALLOWED
If you drop in on another competitor by surfing on the same wave AND same direction AND in front of that competitor, you must make a reasonable effort to get off that wave within 3 seconds. Failure to do so will result in the judge dropping your highest recorded score.
PRIORITY:
To ensure that everyone in your heat has an opportunity to catch scoring waves, judges will enforce the following "priority rule":
If you have already caught a wave (getting to your feet and standing on a wave) AND
are attempting to catch a subsequent wave where another competitor (who has not caught a wave after your most recent wave) is also attempting to catch the same wave, you must give that competitor right of way (that competitor has ìpriorityî, so you may not stand up on the same wave). A competitor with ìpriorityî who surfs in front of a competitor without priority on the same wave in the same direction, is not ìdropping inî. Violation of the priority rule will result in the dropping of your highest recorded score for each offense. The idea is to give every competitor a chance to score.
WHO MAY COMPETE:
Only attorneys, judges, legal staff, law students, and immediate family may qualify to place or win in their respective divisions.
DISQUALIFICATION
The Head Judge reserves the right to disqualify any competitor who does not comply with the above rules.
