The UH Office of Sustainability

The UH Office of Sustainability is located in the historic Hawaii Energy House, which was built at UH Manoa in the 1970s as a model of resource efficiency. Plans are to renovate it to demonstrate current resource-saving technologies. (Bob Chinn photo)

MISSION
To create a University of Hawaii that is sustainable in principle, policy and practice, through a broad-based and cooperatively supported grass-roots effort

VISION
The University of Hawaii will apply the principles of sustainable design and environmental stewardship to all of its activities. It will become a leader in Hawaii and the Pacific region in education, research, extension, and community collaboration related to sustainability.

UH CHARTER OF SUSTAINABILTY
The Office of Sustainability is coordinating the creation of the UH Charter of Sustainability, a set of principles, policies and practices currently being developed by faculty, staff, students and community representatives to guide all of the University’s decisions and activities. The Office also coordinates many projects and events in accord with the Charter that help to create a vibrant, healthful, resource-efficient and culturally sensitive University of Hawaii.

HISTORY
The UH Office of Sustainability was created in response to two strategic planning events conducted by the UH system and UH Manoa at the beginning of 2002. At those extensive brainstorming sessions, each of whose objective was to envision the best future for the University of Hawaii, more than a thousand faculty, staff, student and community members representing the system’s 10 campuses discussed their highest hopes and the key challenges to making them happen.

One of the primary themes that emerged concerned integrating sustainability practices – wise resource use, and healthful and vibrant personal environments – throughout the UH system. With the assistance of the UH Manoa Office of the Chancellor, the UH Manoa Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, Finance and Operations, and Hawaii Sea Grant, the UH Office of Sustainability was established to coordinate projects and events that would accomplish those goals.

PARTNERS AND SUPPORTERS
Sustainability at the University of Hawaii has hundreds of partners and supporters, from large corporations and non-profit organizations to individual faculty, staff, student and community volunteers. (Mahalo to each of them!)

FUNDING
The UH Office of Sustainability is funded primarily by the UH Manoa Office of the Chancellor, with support from numerous UH operational offices and educational departments.
