* RAIL TRANSIT SURVEY *

Proposed Rail Transit Route

Aloha! Thank you for taking this 2-3 minute survey on rail transit, a decision that will affect all of Oahu’s residents and visitors, including our nearly 28,000 UH Manoa students, faculty and staff, for decades to come.

BACKGROUND
The City and County of Honolulu is in the final stages of selecting a plan for mass transit. The options are:
1. Rail
2. Elevated high-occupancy toll lanes
3. An expanded bus system
4. Taking no action

The city’s planners have recommended Rail, with TWO ALTERNATIVE ROUTES:
 the original Kapolei to UH Manoa route, or
 a shorter East Kapolei to Ala Moana route that will not include UH Manoa.

Honolulu’s City Council is holding special meetings across Oahu through November specifically to gain public input on this, Honolulu’s largest public works project to date. Because it may be difficult for students to attend these meetings at this time in the semester, we have developed a simple online survey to let the thousands of UH Manoa’s students, faculty and staff have their voices be heard.

OUR POSITION
We are a coalition of three concerned student organizations: ASUH (the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii), the Sierra Club at UHM, and 2020 Vision. Our position is that the rail line should run to UH Manoa. We believe this will help alleviate concerns of our campus community such as the shortage of parking and dormitories, the high cost of gas and considerable time spent in traffic, commuter safety, and environmental degradation. However, our team has made objectivity a priority, and we urge you to express your own opinion by taking this survey. We will present the information gathered to the Mayor and City Council no matter what the results are.

Again, thank you very much for your time! We hope this survey will assist our leaders in making the best decision for Honolulu’s transportation future.
