| DESCRIPTION: | Adobe released security update 1 for Adobe Reader and Acrobat 8.1.2. They identified a critical vulnerability in various versions
of Adobe Reader and Acrobat that could cause the application to crash and potentially allow remote control access by an attacker. There are reports of exploits in the wild for this vulnerability. Adobe recommends that you update your software as soon as possible. These versions are affected (Windows and Mac): Adobe Reader 8.0 through 8.1.2 (update to Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Security Update 1) Adobe Acrobat Pro, 3D, and Standard 8.0 through 8.1.2 (update to Acrobat 8.1.2 Security Update 1) Adobe Reader 7.0.9 and earlier (update to Adobe Reader 7.1.0) Adobe Acrobat Pro, 3D, and Standard 7.0.9 and earlier (update to Acrobat 7.1.0) For details and updates: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb08-15.html How to Check if Security Update 1 is Installed: WinXP ----- Go to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. Check "show updates", if not already checked. "Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) 8.1.2 Security Update 1 (KB403742)" should be listed. Vista ----- Go to Start, Control Panel, Programs & Features, Installed Updates. "Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) 8.1.2 Security Update 1 (KB403742)" should be listed. Mac OS 10.5 ----------- Click on Applications folder. Control-click on Adobe Reader 8. Control-click on Adober Reader, click "show package contents". Click on SecurityPatchStamps > App_adobe. There is now a txt file called ReaderPatch812su1.txt. Click on the txt file. Text should say "Security Patch for Adobe Reader 8.1.2". There is also a patch.plist file that lists the version as 8.1.2.1. Mac OS 10.4 ----------- Click on Applications folder. Click on Adobe Reader 8. Click on Adobe Reader > About Adobe Plug-Ins. Click on "Comments" on the left pane. Version should be "8.1.2" and date should be a date in June 2008. |
