DESCRIPTION: ITS will end support for PowerPC Macintoshes and Mac OS 10.4.x and 10.5.x on December 31, 2013. McAfee, our antivirus vendor, has announced that they will cease releasing updates for these platforms. Apple has also stopped releasing security updates.

ITS Recommendations

If your Macintosh has a PowerPC processor, or if it is running OS 10.4.x, you are strongly encouraged to purchase a replacement computer. Macintoshes with PowerPC processors cannot be upgraded past 10.5.8.

If your Macintosh is running OS 10.5.x and has an Intel processor and at least 2GB of RAM, you can either purchase a replacement computer, or you can to upgrade to OS 10.6.8.

OS 10.6.8 is available from the Apple Store:

If you would prefer to upgrade to OS 10.7 or 10.8, you will first need to purchase and install the 10.6 upgrade. This upgrade gives you access to the Mac App Store, which is necessary for purchasing 10.7 or 10.8. You would then have to look at the system requirements for 10.7 and 10.8 to see if your Macintosh meets them.

You should also verify that your existing applications will run under 10.7 or 10.8. The website, http://roaringapps.com is one source of information. For example, Office 2004 does not work with OS 10.7 or 10.8.

To purchase 10.7, you would need to contact Apple at 1-800-MY-APPL. After purchase, you would receive a code that you would then use in the Mac App Store to download the 10.7 installer.

You can purchase 10.8 directly through the Mac App Store.
