What graduate degrees are offered?
The University of Hawaii at Manoa offers MA, MFA & Ph.D . degrees in Theatre as well as an MFA in Dance. Applicants to the doctoral program must have a Masters degree in Theatre.
Do I need an undergraduate degree in Theatre to apply to the UHM Theatre MA/MFA programs?
No you don't. Applicants whose previous undergraduate work is in another field may apply and be admitted. However, previous academic work will be reviewed to see if the student has had the required introductory courses in directing, acting, dramatic literature, theatre history, and design. If not, these are considered undergraduate deficiencies and can be taken either prior to attendance or during the initial course of study at UHM.

What kind of funding does the Department of Theatre & Dance have?
There is usually one or two Graduate Division Tuition Waiver/Pacific Asian Scholarships held in reserve for the most promising new students. The department has several GA and lecturer positions for which graduate students may apply. Click here for information on GA positions . Click here for GA application forms. Other possibilities include the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS), East-West Scholarships, as well as Financial Aid Services application.

What is the application deadline for admission to the graduate program?
The deadlines are February 1 for Fall applications, and September 1 for Spring applications.
Does the Department of Theatre require a separate application to the graduate program?
Yes, applicants must apply to both the University of Hawai`i Graduate Division as well as directly to the Department of Theatre & Dance.

Are there minimum requirements for the GRE scores?
Students are required to take the General GRE exam (international students must take the TOEFL as well). The department currently has no minimum requirements for the GRE scores, we use it only as a general diagnostic tool.

How many students are admitted into the graduate program?
On average there are 10-15 new admissions per year, out of a total of 40-60 applications. Currently there are a total of 42 graduate students across all the degree programs.
