How Da B-52 Cockroach Learned to Fly

Lisa Matsumoto, Hawai#i's popular pidgin playwright, has created her own local style "Just So Story." How Da B-52 Cockroach Learned to Fly is a delightful musical adaptation of her popular children's book by the same title that tells the story of Kimo the cockroach and his quest to help his fellow roaches find their place in Hawai#i's insect kingdom. Directing is Tamara Hunt-Montgomery, who directed the original production in 1995 when it was called Das How Come.

Manoa Valley

Manoa Valley provides a nostalgic glimpse at local life just before statehood. Expressed in the rich pidgin of Hawai#i, this play is a warm and gentle look over the back fence into the lives of a local Japanese family. It received its world-premiere at Kennedy Theatre in 1982 under the direction of Glenn Cannon and played to packed houses. Playwright Edward Sakamoto has written a number of plays about Hawai#i and her people, including Our Hearts were Touched with Fire, Aloha! Las Vegas and the Manoa Valley trilogy.

Luck and Loss: Manandin’s Gamble

Traditional Indonesian Randai
Directed by Kirstin Pauka
Guest Master Artists: Mohamad Halim and Saparman Bin Jamaludin

Feb. 6 at 2:00 p.m.

A traditional West Sumatran Randai folk play featuring martial arts, dance, singing, music, and pants-slapping percussion, Manandin's Gamble is a traditional coming-of-age story about love, gambling, and adventure. Master artists from West Sumatra, Mohamad Halim, internationally renowned master of traditional Minangkabau music, and Saparman Bin Jamaludin, master-teacher of Randai dance, acting, and silat (martial arts) will provide specialized training. UHM is the only university in the world that produces Indonesian Randai in English.

Swoop, Tumble, Fly: The Art of Motion

Annual Dance Concert

Choreography by UH Faculty and Guests

March 4, 5, 11, 12 at 8:00 p.m.

The Art of Motion begins with an African fusion dance by guest artist Chuck Davis, one of the foremost teachers and choreographers of African dance in America. A large cast of UHM dance students and community members will perform in this breathtaking blend of artistry, athleticism, dynamism, and explosive energy featuring traditional African, contemporary African American, and modern dance repertoire. The program will culminate with a collaboration between UH’s four resident faculty members who will employ a variety of flying and climbing apparatus to accentuate the beauty of motion in space.

twelf nite o’ WATEVA!

Adapted by James Grant Benton from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night or What You Will
Directed by Terence Knapp

This fabulous and funny pidgin retelling of Shakespeare’s glorious comedy is set in the Kingdom of Hawai#i. Written by James Grant Benton, one of the original members of "Booga Booga", the popular local comic group of the seventies, WATEVA! broke new ground in bringing Shakespeare to local audiences and in bringing pidgin to the stage. It will again be directed by Terence Knapp, who was instrumental in bringing the original to life, and will serve as a tribute to Benton, who passed away in 2002.

This hero’s journey is brought to life by colorful masked characters and puppets of all shapes and sizes in this family theatre production. Recommended for children eight years and older.

Calliope and circus band music provides a colorful musical backdrop for string and rod puppets performing circus feats on an open stage. Skillfully manipulated by master puppeteer Jim Gamble, this production has toured Korea and Japan and was featured at "Open House at the Hollywood Bowl." Perfect for families with children ages 3 and up.

The gothic script features a woman held captive in a mental institution; the imprisonment forces her to the limits of sanity. Current, edgy, political and topical - this performance is sure to spark discussion.
