Planning is now underway for the third Techs In Paradise event, a gathering of advanced networkers from around the world. Anchored by the 25th Meeting of APAN and the Winter 2008 Internet2/ESNet Joint Techs Workshop, the TIP2008 event will provide a rare opportunity to bring together the North American and Asia-Pacific advanced networking communities for a week of meetings, workshops, collaboration, conversation and fellowship.
In addition to APAN Meeting and the Joint Techs, additional
TIP2008 meetings already confirmed include IEEAF, TransPAC2, Net Gurus, NOAA NAT and the Hawaii Intranet Consortium (HIC).
For attendees in telecommunications, the
Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) will hold its annual conference, PTC'08, in Honolulu the week before TIP2008. PTC is the premiere and longest running annual telecommunications event in the Pacific Basin, gathering together thousands of members of the broader ICT community.

TIP2008 room blocks are now available two locations. The Hawaii Intranet Consortium (HIC) is a consortium of government organizations (primarily US DoD) in Hawaii that work together to leverage infrastructure and reduce overall costs. Strategies include maximizing local peering and sharing high-bandwidth links where appropriate.

The Internet2 Network Performance Workshop is a 1.5-day workshop that provides attendees with a working knowledge of how to quickly identify and solve common host configuration and network performance problems. The workshop provides information on installing and using a variety of open-source performance tools, experience in interpreting the tool results, and introduction to methodologies for using a combination of tools to solve real-world problems. Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to: (1) differentiate between host configuration and network infrastructure problems, (2) setup and operate the various servers, (3) assist end-users in using these tools to effectively report problems, and (4) understand how to use these tools for long-term monitoring activities.

At two separate DC Network Workshops, one before (1/18-19) and one after (1/24-25) the main Joint Techs Workshop, participants will construct a working network that allows end systems to allocate dedicated VLAN network resources across multiple administrative domains. Day 1 focuses on basic concepts as well as control plane design and implementation topics. Day 2 addresses inter-domain DC provisioning, with a case study of the Internet2 DC Network integration and international peering issues. Upon completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to design and implement a GMPLS-based DC network on their campus. Registration is limited to 16 participants for each workshop.

CAIDA, the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis and the
consortium of Japanese research organizations and companies working to establish a Widely Integrated Distributed Environment will be doing a joint workshop at TIP2008. The objectives of informal joint CAIDA/WIDE workshops are:
* to discuss Internet measurement analysis activities going on in each organization;
* to explore opportunities for joint collaboration on projects;
* to continue data exchange.

The Internet Educational Equal Access Foundation was established to accelerate the growth of Internet2 and Next Generation Internetworking to enable and stimulate the rapid expansion of collaboration among educational institutions across the world. Since 1998 the Joint Techs Workshop have drawn together advanced networking engineers featuring tutorials, presentations, Birds-Of-a-Feather meetings, in-depth technical sessions and demonstrations of state-of-the-art high-performance networking technologies. The 2008 Hawaii Joint Techs Workshop is the third event co-sponsored internationally to bring together the North American and Asia-Pacific advanced networking community. TransPAC2 is a high-speed international Internet service connecting
research and education networks in the Asia-Pacific region to those in
the US. TransPAC2 furthers National Science Foundation (NSF) efforts to
provide fundamental network infrastructure to support international
e-science collaborations among researchers worldwide and is the 5-year
continuation of the highly successful TransPAC project. TransPAC2 is
part of the NSF's International Research Network Connections (IRNC)
program.

PTC is the largest annual telecommunications event in the Pacific rim. The theme for PTC'08, Telecom with Vision, will focus on the dramatic impact of interactive video and user-created content on telecommunications networks, markets and regulatory policy throughout the Asia-Pacific regions and around the world.
