Come join us for tea and refreshments as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of UHELP. Learn about our Elder Law and Veterans Clinic, where we offer free legal services, advice, counsel and referrals to qualified veterans and elders.

In anticipation of the 75th anniversary commemoration of Pearl Harbor Day, we are honored to have UH alumnus, attorney, arbitrator and historian, Ted Tsukiyama, a WWII veteran who served with the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). He will talk about how he and other students formed the University of Hawai`i's Varsity Victory Volunteers (VVV) and how many of that group went on to serve in the MIS, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 100th Infantry Battalion and other distinguished military units.

We also are proud to have with us the Honorable Judge Coral Wong Pietsch appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. She also served in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAGC) on active duty, in the Reserve and as a civilian lawyer. She was the first woman of Asian ancestry to be promoted to the rank of general officer in the U.S. Army and was the first woman general in the Army JAGC.

Stay for a panel discussion with Judge Pietsch and Prof. James Pietsch about service to the country and community with an emphasis on opportunities for women lawyers. They will talk about their military and civilian legal practice, including service as Rule of Law Advisors in Iraq.

VVV in front of Barracks

"After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the University of Hawaii ROTC was called to duty and mobilized into the Hawaii Territorial Guard (HTG). Six weeks later, all men of Japanese ancestry were dismissed from the HTG and classified as Class C-Enemy Aliens. In response, the Varsity Victory Volunteers was established. The VVV built barracks, smashed rocks in the quarry and performed other menial labors. They declared: "We know but one loyalty and that is to the Stars and Stripes. We wish to do our part as loyal Americans. . ."
