The WebPAC Taskforce has made the following decisions as a group representing all the sites in the UH Voyager Shared Database. This group has agreed that all sites will share the same "look" within their virtual voyager web sites. All changes shall be agreed upon by this group. Kris Anderson, Chair, UH Manoa --------------------------------- Shared Database Location Displays It is the decision of the WebPAC Taskforce, with the support of VoyagerPAC-L list, that the Voyager location code for UH-Manoa should be such that the Manoa holdings display LAST in the Voyager OPAC. ------------------------------------- Rules for OPAC Location Display Names Following are the general rules that will be used to generate the Location Display in the OPAC. The examples from the sites follow the list of rules. Not all sites are listed as not all have submitted their codes and I did not list all of Manoa's but you should see the pattern. Windward and West Oahu have chosen to list themselves to stay in pattern even though it means their holdings will file after Manoa's. The idea is to standardize the display across the sites while giving the most understandable and explicit locations for patrons. The criteria for OPAC Location Code stands as follows: 1) Format: Campus: Collection Special Rules 2) Location will be in Title Case; i.e. First Letter of Each Word Capitalized 3) Campus name will be followed by a colon followed by a single space. Colons and hyphens will be the only punctuation or special characters other than a "/" between Hawaii/Pacific for those sites with collections bearing this name. 4) Library Use Only may be used to designate items which do not circulate. 5) There will be no abbreviations other than "UH" and "CC" except as agreed by the WebPAC Taskforce. all this becomes moot as the search options are collapsed into 2 choices. ------------------------------------- Field Weighting for Keyword Relevancy Here is a quick lesson on Endeavor's relevancy ranking. There are four rules which control the algorithm by which the Endeavor software ranks the records: 1) Proximity of terms within 5 words. Does not cross subfields. 2) Number of times the word appears in the database, a word with fewer occurances will have a higher relevancy. i.e. medieval is more relevant than history if searching for medieval history 3) Field Weighting - selected by library - priority based on which field is searched. Hawaii Voyager will use University of Pennsylvania's numbers. See below. 4) Depends on the use of "+", "*" or quotes as these will automatically increase the relevancy. The records resulting from a given search will be ranked with the most relevant first depicted by 5 marks - in our case fish - and the least relevant by 1 mark - in our case a canoe. Remember with the relevancy keyword search that the biggest problem/complaint is that the words typed in, unless enclosed in quotes, are booleaned OR'ed together which is different than CARL and most Web search engines. We are using the University of Pennsylvania's field weighting for keyword relevancy.
