RESOLUTION ON LAW AND SOCIETY UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROPOSAL

WHEREAS, the mission of the University of Hawai'i states a desire to emerge as "America's foremost institution of higher education -- permeated by a multicultural focus and experiences that are distinctly Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific", and

WHEREAS, law is a central institution within most societies and affects Scholarship across many academic disciplines, and

WHEREAS, the proposed certificate will provide students with a comparative legal Framework to understand the changing traditions of legality, diffusion, and Influence of legal knowledge and practice and varieties of legal order, and

WHEREAS, the proposed certificate will also expose students to the experience of indigenous peoples with law, colonial states and postcolonial contexts, including the experience of Native Hawaiians with western law, and

WHEREAS, the proposal has received support from the Department of Political Science, Women's Studies, Sociology, Economics, Hawaiian Studies and the William S. Richardson School of Law, and

WHEREAS, it has been confirmed that the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Libraries have the resources to support this certificate, and

WHEREAS, the Committee on Academic Policy and Planning has reviewed and endorsed the proposal, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Manoa Faculty Senate approved the Law and Society undergraduate certificate.
