RESOLUTION TO ENDORSE THE TRANSFER OF THE ACADEMY OF CREATIVE MEDIA FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR FOR UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION TO THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES


WHEREAS
In 2002 a group of faculty, student, film industry and community members submitted a report recommending that a program be created to administer a major in Cinema and Digital Media using existing UHM media studies courses; AND

WHEREAS
Such a program be offered through the “liberal studies” major now called “inter-disciplinary studies; AND

WHEREAS
In Fall 2003, the then Chancellor Peter Englert restructured the program as its own academic unit and called it the “Academy of Creative Media” and housed it as a campus-wide program within the Office of the Associate Dean of the College or Arts and Sciences; AND

WHEREAS
In January 2004, the Board of Regents approved the creation of the “Academy of Creative Media’ with new funding from the legislature for new faculty positions; AND

WHEREAS
In 2004, the Office of the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Science was moved to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and was re-named the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education; AND

WHEREAS
The Academy of Creative Media too was transferred together with all reporting units to the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education; AND

WHEREAS
The proposal for a BA Degree in Creative Media was approved by the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee in Fall 2007, in Spring 2009 by the Mānoa Faculty Senate and finally by the Board of Regents in the same year; AND

WHEREAS
The Faculty Senate endorsed the BA Degree in Creative Media with the proviso that the Academy of Creative Media be expeditiously transferred to the College of Arts and Sciences; AND
WHEREAS The current re-organization transfer request by the Academy of Creative Media to be housed within the College of Arts and Humanities does not change its curriculum; degree requirements; personnel, budget; AND

WHEREAS
The transfer will facilitate collaboration among departments such as Art, Music, Theater and Dance and the Academy of Creative Media, that share similar interests, experiences, goals and needs; AND

WHEREAS
The Academy of Creative media will benefit from the administrative structure of a College that supports academic departments with academic personnel; AND

WHEREAS
Such a transfer has been requested by the Academy of Creative Media in agreement with other departments in the college and the acceptance by the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities; AND THEREFORE

BE IT RESOLVED
That Senate endorse the re-organization and transfer requested by the Academy of Creative Media from the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education to the College of Arts and Humanities.
