RESOLUTION ON THE ROLE OF SPECIALIST FACULTY IN TEACHING

Whereas some specialist faculty teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and some specialist faculty conduct research, and these activities make important contributions to the programs of UH Manoa, and

Whereas Appendix B of the UHM Criteria and Guidelines for Faculty Tenure and Promotion describes examples of specialist faculty work in the university as:

  • p.3 “Supervising internships, practica, research, work experience”
  • p.3 “Designing, developing and teaching academic courses”
  • p.5 “Providing expertise/consultation in developing and/or teaching courses/workshops in collaboration with other university professionals”

Therefore be it resolved that the Manoa Faculty Senate respectfully recommends that language be modified in the Board of Regents Policies and Bylaws Section 9-2.e.(4).(a).3. (Page 9-5) as follows:
3. Specialist (S), includes junior specialists, assistant specialists, associate specialists, and specialists. The S series is used for specialties not primarily involved with research and teaching

And be it further resolved that the Manoa Faculty Senate respectfully recommends that language be modified the University of Hawaii Executive Policy E5.221 Section IV. 1. b(3) Specialists (Page 18) as follows:
The instructional and research functions of the University in some areas require the support of certain persons with full professional training or experience, but who do not themselves primarily teach or conduct research.
