Resolution Regarding the Lack of Written Procedures for the Designation of Emeritus Faculty

Whereas there are no written procedures for designation of emeritus faculty as called for by E9-209 Awarding of Emeritus Title; and

Whereas the role of faculty in those written procedures should be defined.

Therefore be it resolved

That the Manoa Faculty Senate suggests that the proposed procedure for designation of emeritus faculty include the following elements:

  1. Nominations and self nominations are forwarded to the chairs of departments.
  2. Nominations are reviewed by departmental faculty and the department chair
    1. At a regular meeting, or
    2. At a meeting of a committee formed according to departmental procedures, or
    3. At a meeting of the designated Departmental Personnel Committee.
  3. Nominations are forwarded by the department chair with a summary letter indicating the departmental faculty's endorsement or non-endorsement and department chair's endorsement or non-endorsement to the appropriate University decision-making authority.
