MOTION TO ENCOURAGE SUPPORT OF RELIEF EFFORTS FOR THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS

The widespread destruction, devastation and death brought forth by Typhoon Yolanda  (Haiyan) on November 6, 2013, especially to Tacloban City and nearby towns and islands across Samar and Leyte provinces, is overwhelming relief agencies. Relief efforts are overwhelmed by the urgent need for funds, food and shelter. UH Manoa is home to a large percentage of Filipino students, faculty and staff.

The UH Manoa Center for Philippine Studies has identified appropriate relief organizations including, but not limited to, the Philippine National Red Cross; The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); Republic of the Philippines; ABS-CBN “Sagip Kapamilya”; Jesuit Philippines Foundation; COVO Foundation “Kokua Visayas” and the Filcom Center (Honolulu).

Therefore, moved that the Manoa Faculty Senate encourages all members of the University of Hawaii community to open their hearts to the people of the Philippines by giving to these or other relief organizations
