WHEREAS the Undergraduate Certificate in Chinese, Japanese and Korean will serve the interests of students by providing a credential certifying proficiency in the language; and
WHEREAS the certificate will also serve departments' interests by providing a focus for students wishing to pursue advanced studies without pursuing a major; and
WHEREAS comparable certificate programs already exist for other languages taught at the University of Hawaii-Manoa; and
WHEREAS there is no need for any additional faculty, offices, classrooms, or other financial resources; and
WHEREAS encouraging the study of these languages is fully consonant with the University's mission of internationalization of the curriculum and development of expertise in the area of Asian/Pacific studies; and
WHEREAS the Faculty Senate Committee on Academic Policy and Planning has reviewed and endorsed the proposed program; now
Therefore, be it RESOLVED that the Manoa Faculty Senate recommends the approval of the Undergraduate Certificate in Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
