Communicate with the Senate
WHEREAS community college transfer students are an important segment of Manoa's enrollment, constituting at least 50 percent of all students admitted, and
WHEREAS national standards and practices do not permit the transfer of grades and grade points between campuses but only credits, and
WHEREAS for admission purposes, the Admissions Office currently calculates a transfer grade point average which includes grades earned in all college classes, even repeated classes, and
WHEREAS community colleges provide developmental education for students seeking access to baccalaureate degree programs and assist them to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for success when transferring to four year colleges and universities, and
WHEREAS some community college students may need to retake courses in order to remediate educational deficiencies or further develop academic competencies, and
WHEREAS it is well settled in contemporary pedagogy that individuals learn in different ways and that the goal of teaching is the acquisition of content and skills over time, and
WHEREAS community college students who retake courses to increase their knowledge and skills for success in college should not, arguably, be penalized for such behavior by Manoa's admission process, and
WHEREAS cumulative collegiate grade point average is calculated by the Admissions Office only for the purpose of determining a students "readiness" to undertake studies at Manoa, and
WHEREAS all students seeking admission into competitive programs of study are required to be evaluated in the same manner, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that the Manoa Faculty Senate concurs with the recommendation of the Admissions Office that the procedure for calculating a transfer grade point average far admission purposes only, be amended by using only the highest grade earned in any repeated class.
