RESOLUTION RELATING TO TRANSFER OF THE MARINE OPTION PROGRAM FROM SOEST TO COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES

WHEREAS the University of Hawai'i at Manoa is a Sea Grant university, established to provide marine-related higher education opportunities for Hawai'i's citizens, and

WHEREAS the Marine Option Program (MOP) provides a valuable service in the form of a range of hands-on marine education and training experiences to students from a wide variety of disciplines at Manoa as well as other UH campuses, and

WHEREAS MOP has been a program awarding a 16-credit undergraduate course and activity certificate at Manoa since 1971 and more than 12,000 students have participated in MOP activities at Manoa alone, and

WHEREAS MOP has been a program within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) since its inception in 1988, and

WHEREAS SOEST has developed a new baccalaureate degree-granting program called Global Environmental Science (GES) and wishes to redirect MOP funding to GES, and

WHEREAS the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) is in the process of developing an undergraduate degree-granting Marine Biology Program and MOP would be an excellent location for students to obtain hands-on experience and a window to the community by involving students in internships, and

WHEREAS CNS is committed to provide stable, long-term financial support but does not have office or laboratory space available for MOP, and

WHEREAS MOP courses are interdisciplinary in nature, the Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) Program within the Colleges of Arts and Sciences has agreed to host courses for MOP, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED that the Manoa Faculty Senate recommends that the Marine Option Program be transferred from the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology to the College of Natural Sciences and that the Manoa Chancellor's office provide adequate and appropriate space for MOP so that it can continue its valuable service to the University.
