UH Mānoa Faculty Senate CPM Resolution on Tenure/Promotion Dossier Simplification
Whereas, at the November 2007 Faculty Congress, Chancellor Hinshaw encouraged us
to “challenge bureaucratic practices that don’t add value,”
Whereas, a dossier following the current dossier guidelines and forms is time
consuming, dated, and unnecessarily complex and bureaucratic for the candidates
and reviewing bodies,
Whereas, the current process wastes paper, creating multiple copies in huge
stacks of large folders that must be securely transported and stored,
Whereas, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education interviews with key
stakeholders and two focus groups of faculty who had recently submitted dossiers
produced no evidence of added quality or value,
Therefore, be it resolved that the
FORMS AND ACCESS:
1. Develop a campus-wide standard curriculum vita format,
2. Make vita and tenure/promotion application pdf form fillable and savable,
3. Develop a secure site where tenure materials can be easily uploaded by the
candidate and reviewed by various parties,
DOSSIER:
1. Delete Chair verification except for classes taught,
2. Discourage internal support letters from candidate’s own department and
non-confidential letters,
3. Limit length of sections,
4. Delete Present and Future Value section,
5. Allow simpler formatting on paper format before new system is
implemented (simplify pagination, labels for name and page numbers,
three-hole punch, binders).
