Manoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee Minutes of April 25, 2005
Chairman Tom Schroeder convened the SEC at 3:00 p.m. with Uchida,
Dator, Lukas, Hilgers, Ramsey and Bley-Vroman present. Also present
were the newly elected SEC members: Barry Raleigh, Jim Tiles, Bill
Lampe, Denise Konan, and Martha Staff.
- The Chair reported on the April BOR meeting. Also, the
chancellor's office informally has asked for nominees for two
committees to "implement" an alcohol policy and the security task
force recommendations. Later in the meeting the Chair also reported
that the May BOR meeting will consider Gaines' revision of the
classified research policy and that the Chancellor may take a UARC
proposal for final approval to the September BOR meeting.
- The Senate Agenda for May 4 was reviewed. The CPM statement
about Emeritus Faculty was removed from the agenda (CPM views it as a
report to the SEC). GenEd will be given time to review the handling
of the HAP requirement, but most committee annual reports will be
electronic. The Chair will endeavor to have the chancellor's new team
(Smatresk, Ostrander, Cutshaw) make a presentation about priorities
- The current activities of all standing committees were reviewed.
GEC and CFS met recently. CFS consulted with SEC about suggesting
faculty for the search committee for a new VC for Students (search to
be concluded by December). GEC met to finish all business in time for
the registration for fall classes that is imminent.
- Raleigh suggested that the SEC request a copy of the President's
evaluation of the Chancellor. Schroeder paraphrased Raleigh's
request: what is the status of the chancellor?
- After the "old" SEC adjourned, the "new" SEC (with holdover
members Ramsey and Bley-Vroman) met to elect officers. Bley-Vroman is
chair, J. Tiles is vice-chair, M. Staff is Senate Secretary, and
Ramsey is SEC secretary. The new SEC will try to make committee
assignments on May 2.
