At the
September 2007 BOR meeting, the Chair David Chin presented two Senate
resolutions: 1) resolution on Open Records as adopted by the Senate on September
19, 2007, and 2) resolution regarding the UARC as adopted by the UHM Faculty
Senate on May 2, 2007. The All Campus Council of Faculty Senate Chairs (ACCFSC)
also submitted a resolution regarding the UARC.

Hearing no
requests for corrections or changes, the minutes were adopted.
Policy on
Classified & Proprietary Research (Committee on Research):
COR Chair Roy Wilkens led a discussion about the policy (http://cp-research-policy.wikispaces.com/revised+draft+oct+17%2c+2007).
After some discussion and group editing, the updated policy will now be turned
over to the Committee on Professional Matters for further review.
Faculty Handbook
(Committee on Professional Matters):
Lonny Carlisle and Kim Binsted solicited
additional input from the senate to the handbook, which can be found at
https://wwwdev.hawaii.edu/uhmfswiki/index.php/Main_Page.
Senators are encouraged to submit their updates to the handbook.
Sustainability:
Mary Tiles requested the assistance of all faculty to identify courses with a
sustainability content. The objective is to prepare a list of courses and make
it available on the sustainability website (www.sustainability.hawaii.edu)
for the Spring 2008 semester. Course information such as the course number,
title, description, prerequisites, and link to course site are being requested.
Dr. Tiles gave us an update on the Sustainability Committee. A Utilities Manager
and Sustainability Volunteer Coordinator have been hired.
New Business:
Faculty Congress
Meeting:
M. Crosby moved
that the Faculty Congress Meeting for the Fall 2007 semester be scheduled for
Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at 3:00p. The motion was unanimously approved.
WASC Special
Visit:
B. Keever inquired
about the senate’s involvement in the upcoming special visit. The senate’s
various committees and special appointments have already provided
input in the areas of assessment and program review, the budgetary
process, and campus leadership.
Arts & Sciences
Reorganization:
Chancellor Hinshaw addressed the senate about the progress of
the discussions about the shape of Arts & Sciences. Her office has been working
with groups across campus to foster discussions about Arts & Sciences. There are
a number of areas being incorporated into the plan that will be forwarded such
as retention rates, graduation rates, and student perspectives about their
campus experiences. The discussion extends to the status of programs such as
Interdisciplinary Studies, the Honors Program, and others who currently report
to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Based on the initial
round of meetings, the Chancellor will present details about next steps to
refine the proposed model(s). A request was made that the background of each
model also be presented.

Ambassadors Program:
Kelly Ching of GEARUP and Gerald Lau of Information &
Computer Sciences invited faculty to join this program as ambassadors of UH
Manoa. The program links UH with the schools in
