Minutes of the September 17, 2007 UHM Faculty Senate Meeting:
Hearing no requests for corrections or changes, the minutes were adopted.

Policy on Classified & Proprietary Research (Committee on Research):
COR Chair Roy Wilkens led a discussion about the policy (http://cp-research-policy.wikispaces.com/revised+draft+oct+17%2c+2007). After some discussion and group editing, the updated policy will now be turned over to the Committee on Professional Matters for further review.

Faculty Handbook (Committee on Professional Matters):
Lonny Carlisle and Kim Binsted solicited additional input from the senate to the handbook, which can be found at
https://wwwdev.hawaii.edu/uhmfswiki/index.php/Main_Page. Senators are encouraged to submit their updates to the handbook.

Sustainability:
Mary Tiles requested the assistance of all faculty to identify courses with a sustainability content. The objective is to prepare a list of courses and make it available on the sustainability website (www.sustainability.hawaii.edu) for the Spring 2008 semester. Course information such as the course number, title, description, prerequisites, and link to course site are being requested. Dr. Tiles gave us an update on the Sustainability Committee. A Utilities Manager and Sustainability Volunteer Coordinator have been hired.

New Business:

Faculty Congress Meeting:
M. Crosby moved that the Faculty Congress Meeting for the Fall 2007 semester be scheduled for Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at 3:00p. The motion was unanimously approved.

WASC Special Visit:
B. Keever inquired about the senate’s involvement in the upcoming special visit. The senate’s various committees and special appointments have already provided  input in the areas of assessment and program review, the budgetary process, and campus leadership.

Arts & Sciences Reorganization:
Chancellor Hinshaw addressed the senate about the progress of the discussions about the shape of Arts & Sciences. Her office has been working with groups across campus to foster discussions about Arts & Sciences. There are a number of areas being incorporated into the plan that will be forwarded such as retention rates, graduation rates, and student perspectives about their campus experiences. The discussion extends to the status of programs such as Interdisciplinary Studies, the Honors Program, and others who currently report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Based on the initial round of meetings, the Chancellor will present details about next steps to refine the proposed model(s). A request was made that the background of each model also be presented.

Faculty Ambassadors Program:
Kelly Ching of GEARUP and Gerald Lau of Information & Computer Sciences invited faculty to join this program as ambassadors of UH Manoa. The program links UH with the schools in Hawaii and provides opportunities for students to interact with the faculty.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:25p.

Respectfully submitted,
Lei Wakayama
