Mānoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee
Minutes of August 4, 2008
Mānoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee
Monday – August 4, 2008; Hawaiʻi Hall 208
Present: Wakayama, Crookes, Hilgers, Ross, Tiles, Crosby
SEC meeting, 3:00 pm
1) Minutes of last week’s meeting were revised following discussion and will be re-submitted for approval next week.
2) Ross provided details of the recent BoR meeting he attended.
3) Discussion of faculty senate membership of the committee to decide on processes for allocation of positions vacated through retirements. Eight names will be forwarded.
4) Topics for the Chancellor’s “advance” (aka the scheduled UHM-Faculty Senate retreat).
SEC members will bring forward ideas for this next meeting.
5) Update on the A&S reorg meeting.
Crosby reported on a recent reorg committee meeting (that of the non-Chancellor committee). A hybrid model with functional deans for research and undergraduate education and area deans that would cluster around academic themes has apparently met with approval within the committee. A key point would be whether those positions would be executive and managerial; this had not been explored apparently.
6) TIM
SEC continued to discuss aspects of the proposal for new programs etc at TIM in cooperation with institutions in Singapore.
7) Export controls
SEC on behalf of Faculty Senate has been asked to comment on a fairly complex draft executive policy concerning export policy; this has also been sent to UHARI. A very tight deadline has been provided by UH System VP Gaines. SEC will protest the short deadline and request a long period of time for consultation.
Meeting with VC Kathy Cutshaw
1) The VC discussed details of developments concerning possible CIP projects.
2) The VC presented possible options for policy concerning future faculty housing. Faculty housing is very important as a recruitment (and retention) tool. Past faculty senate pronouncements on faculty housing may need to be examined. SEC will bring recent developments to the attention of CAB.
3) The VC also raised the possibility of having limitations on vehicular entry to UHM campus after 10 pm. This was not discussed at length and she may bring more details forward later.
Respectfully submitted,
Graham Crookes
