Mānoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee
Minutes of August 11, 2008

Mānoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee
Monday – August 11, 2008; Hawaiʻi Hall 208
Present: Wakayama, Crookes, Hilgers, Ross, Tiles, Crosby

SEC meeting, 3:00 pm

1) Minutes of two weeks ago were approved; minutes of last week’s meeting were approved.

2) SEC returned once again to the topic of a director for the Manoa Assessment Office. No resolution of the matter was forthcoming though MAO’s responsibilities and location were discussed; SEC will take up the matter again in the near future.

3) SEC further reviewed its understanding of TIM proposals for a program in Singapore, prior to an upcoming meeting with interested parties (including the UH administration, UHPA, TIM faculty, and lawyers). Mary Tiles was designated the official Faculty Senate representative for a higher level meeting on this topic.

4) Topics for discussion during the forthcoming UHM Administration-Faculty Senate “advance” (i.e., retreat).

SEC discussed these topics following a draft from Hilgers. One focus continues to be the undergraduate experience that is distinctively Manoa’s (as opposed to that offered by the community colleges). SEC noted in passing that early enrolment figures at UHM are 2-5% down, whereas enrolment figures elsewhere in the System are up, which SEC considered not surprising given that Manoa is much more expensive and faces the perception that it has large or difficult freshman classes that are not otherwise different from those at the community colleges.

Respectfully submitted,
Graham Crookes
