2:30 SEC meeting

SEC worked on discussion items related to the SEC-UHM retreat.

Meeting with VC Ostrander

1) SEC raised the matter of staffing the MAO with VC Ostrander for his future reference.

2) VC Ostrander raised the possibility of exploring the efficacy of a four-day week for UHM.

3) VC Ostrander reported on the allocation of RTRF for the academic year just completed. A polished draft was circulated; a final version will appear on the VC’s website after any comments on it are received from SEC (and possibly other stakeholders).

4) The future of ORS was discussed; this is still a system operation but it is planned that it will devolved to UHM eventually. Issues surround the need for support for ORS and where that may come from.

5) Devolvement of funding for research from URC to Deans and Directors. VC Ostrander distributed a draft of a spreadsheet tabulating estimates of figures based on the past three years of RTRF URC funds by unit. One SEC member raised concerns about the extent to which this money would be available and processes understood by faculty members. Ostrander pointed out that his office will require appropriate reports from colleges at the end of the year.

6) VC Ostrander requested input from SEC on how to put together university-wide expertise for the constitution of the Ethics Board, a UH System committee. SEC will discuss this further and refer to one or more standing committees.

Respectfully submitted,
Graham Crookes
