Mānoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee
Minutes of January 12, 2009
Mānoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee
Monday – Jan 12, 2009; Hawaiʻi Hall 208
Present: Crookes, Crosby, Hilgers, Ross, Tiles, Wakayama
Absent (travelling, excused): Keil
3:00 SEC meeting
1) Approval of minutes of previous meeting.
2) Chair’s report
ACCFSC meeting of the past Thursday was attended by Keil
and Ross. They expressed the SEC’s concerns to suggestions made on behalf of
ACCFSC about the plausibility of ACCFSC being used as a stand-in for
consultation with faculty across the entire system by the UH President.
The search firm and part of the search committee for the
new UH President were at this meeting. Criteria for the position do not appear
to be finalized and the search committee is inviting input. The search firm has
indicated that the pool of candidates is likely to be small based on the state
of other searches they are conducting.
President McClain addressed the ACCFSC and provided an
analysis of how the projected 20% cut would manifest itself. Unassigned balances
in e.g. RTRF, or funds accumulating for specific purposes, are seen as likely to
be raided, separately on each distinct campus.
Community colleges are apparently concerned about SLOs
possibly being used to evaluate faculty.
3.
COIA Attendance
Crosby will attend.

Committee Reports
Committee on Faculty Service (CFS) is seeking faculty
interested in evaluation to sit on one or other of two possible committees.
What appears to be a Chancellor’s task force is being
formed to relate to international education with a charge to establish a
strategic plan in this area. (SEC will ask the Chancellor for more details when
it next meets with her.) CFS will seek interested faculty to add to this group.
CAPP: CAPP is finalizing a resolution to establish a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Academy of Creative Media for review by the Faculty
Senate, however, the committee continues to have concerns about the intellectual
property rights of their students as it relates to their projects. The
transmittal memo to the SEC will provide the details of the concerns of the
committee.
CAB: CAB met at length with VCRGE concerning the proposed
PBRC reorganization. SEC now anticipates that the VC
will need to produce a formal written proposal, in line with BoR
regulations concerning the process to be followed when a unit is reorganized.
This would then be formally considered by CAB and CAPP.
Gen Ed: A memo on the articulation of General Education
courses has been prepared by AVC for Undergraduate Education. In future UHM will
accept the diversification designation of a course as specified by the sending
campus .,
CSA is facing some difficulties in attendance/meeting
times. SEC encourage the recruitment of non-senator faculty to attend meetings,
and also considered the need to recruit candidates in the upcoming Fac Senate
election.
5.
Organizational & Reporting Lines of Assessment Office (Response to Memo
regarding Ad Hoc Committee)

ad hoc committee to recommend the reporting lines and tenure process for the
Assessment Office.

Nicholson to discuss the report prior to the presentation in March 2009.

CAB and COR will be invited to the January 26th Standing Appointment
with VCR&GE Ostrander.
10.

Respectfully submitted,
Graham Crookes
