Mānoa Faculty Senate Assessment Committee
Minutes of January 4, 2010
Members Present: Paul Brandon, Erica Clayton, Jon Goss, Wayne Iwaoka, Phillip Ooi, Jim Wills

Guests: Marlene Lowe and Monica Stitt-Bergh (Assessment Office)
Meeting Called to order by Paul Brandon: 12:30 p.m.
I. The meeting agenda was presented and accepted by common consent.
II. Minutes of the December 14, 2009, meeting were reviewed and approved (unanimous).
III. Meeting date and time for Spring 2010: Mondays at 12:30 pm.
IV. Presentation of the MAC SLO Draft Resolution to the faculty senate was discussed
o Target date of presentation to the Faculty Senate – February 17, 2010
o Paul Brandon will first present the purpose and usefulness of the SLOs at the meeting
o The following committee members will draft talking points for the nine “whereas” bullets for presentation at the February 17, 2010 faculty senate meeting:
(1) – Jon Goss;
(2) through (4) – Paul Brandon;
(5) and (6) – Wayne Iwaoka
(7) – Jim Wills; and
(8) and (9) – Erica Clayton;
o Wayne Iwaoka and Paul Brandon will find student representatives from ASUH and GSO to argue the advantages of this Draft SLO Resolution at the February 17 faculty senate meeting and will ask that student members be appointed to the committee.
V. Development of Assessment Policies. A couple of members reported their telephone conversations with assessment coordinators at other institutions.
o Jim Wills reported his conversation with the assessment coordinator at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) . In general, UIUC is about at the same stage of development of their assessment process as UHM.
o Jon Goss reported that the assessment status at Grand Valley State University and Oregon State University are laid out well on their Web sites.
VI. Review of AO strategic planning documents: The members were asked to send comments about the documents to the Monica and Marlene.
VII. and VII. The following two subcommittees have been formed to address Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) and assessment policies.

IX. Review of Upcoming Dates:
Next MAC meeting Monday, January 25, 2010 at 12:30 PM in Hawaii Hall 208. It was also agreed to meet again on February 8, 2010 prior to the February 17, Faculty Senate meeting. Purposes: To continue discussion/planning for faculty senate presentation of SLO resolution.
X. WASC Retreat for Faculty Teams:
Date: January 28, 2010 – January 30, 2010
Place: Waikiki Marriott
At the retreat, participants will (1) attend workshops and presentations; (2) submit two assessment practices that have been effective in the past; and (3) receive individual consultation on a topic of choice. Halina Zaleski suggested that we submit the following two topics for consultation: ILOs and Assessment Policies.
Funding is available for 3 to 4 MAC members to attend. Wayne Iwaoka will attend. There is room for 1 to 2 more. Jon Goss will check his availability on those dates. Halina is interested in attending but wants to ensure that the committee members be given preference. Deadline for registration is January 8, 2010.
