Note: This is being composed on January 10 since the Chair will be on the road from January 11 through 13.
The semester break has been fairly quiet so the Chair's report will be fairly brief.
The SEC has worked over the break to appoint the Ad Hoc Committee on Classified Research and Related Matters as requested by the Senate at the December 8 meeting. The members will be announced at today's meeting. We are still resolving some details of how the committee will conduct its business. Neal Milner of Political Science has agreed to serve as a facilitator for the committee.
The SEC has collated responses from the standing committees who have been involved in consultations with the Chancellor's Office on the pending Manoa Chancellor's Office reorganization which as of the time of this writing (January 10) is planned for the Board of Regents agenda for January 20. On January 7 Chancellor Englert submitted formal responses to the report of the Committee on Administration and Budget which the Senate "received" at December 8, 2004 meeting. The SEC has drafted a resolution for your consideration.
The Chair attended a meeting of the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics on January 6 and 7 at Vanderbilt University. The purpose of the meeting was to develop a draft position paper on Academic Integrity in Intercollegiate Athletics which includes some proposed legislation for NCAA consideration. The draft will be forwarded to the Committee on Athletics for comment and recommendation of Senate action (target: the February meeting).
