Bachelor of Education: Elementary

There are two undergraduate programs in music available for students enrolled in the elementary education program (K-6):

  1. Elementary Education - Music Academic Emphasis
  2. Elementary Education - General Music

Both programs meet Hawaii's (and most other states') requirements for teaching full-time as an elementary education teacher; e.g., teaching all elementary school subjects to a first or fifth-grade class. In addition, the programs develop competency in teaching music in greater depth. Hawaii does not grant teachers certification in elementary music, so that anyone desiring to teach music in Hawaii's public schools must fulfill all requirements in elementary education, and will be hired as an elementary generalist. The principal may then assign the person to teach music either part-time or full-time.

Elementary Education - Music Academic Emphasis (18 credits in music) develops introductory competencies in music for the non-music major interested in learning more about music. The program is designed for the prospective elementary teacher who wishes to gain more skill and knowledge about music. It is not designed for students wishing to teach music full-time (these students should enroll in the Elementary-General program). Total credits needed for degree: 126.

Elementary Education - General Music (41 credits in music) develops student competencies in teaching general music to children in the classroom, to include developing concepts of music and skills in singing, listening, playing easy-to-play instruments, rhythmic movement and creativity, and note-reading. Students in this program could obtain positions in elementary school teaching or music teaching (Hawaii private schools, other states). This program is designed for music majors. Total credits needed for degree: 132-140.
