Bachelor of Education: Secondary


The music education programs offered at the secondary level prepare the student to teach in a major area (instrumental, vocal, or general music) at any level, K-12, with primary emphasis centered on the secondary level (secondary levels include intermediate school and high school). Certification in these degree programs is valid in most other states.")

Secondary Choral Music

This program prepares the student to teach vocal music-solo, ensemble, and chorus in grades 7 through 12. Coursework includes vocal performance, music theory, music history, and student teaching.

Instrumental Music

At the completion of this program, the student is prepared to teach instrumental music (band, orchestra) in grades 7 through 12. Coursework includes performance on a major instrument, methods classes on all band and orchestra instruments, music theory, music history, and student teaching.

Secondary General Music

This program is designed to stress the importance of teaching classes in general music at the secondary level. Coursework emphasizes breadth, and offers classes in dance and ethnomusicology as well as performance, theory, and music history.
