Bachelor of Music in Guitar

The BM in guitar program at U.H. is designed for the student who intends to make a professional career in music as a concert artist, private teacher, or classroom instructor. This program focuses on the development of traditional and contemporary classical guitar techniques and on the acquisition of repertoire traditionally associated with the field of classical guitar (as opposed to the fields of rock, folk, jazz, popular, commercial, etc., music). Students will be introduced to music written and/or transcribed for the classical guitar in both solo and ensemble settings. This would include music of the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and impressionist composers, as well as new art music of the 20th century and beyond.

BM Guitar

Intended BM students are initially regarded by the music department as BA (general) students upon entry, except for the rare student whose entrance audition reveals that s/he is clearly BM guitar material. Those who are not accepted into the BM guitar program upon entrance to UH and who subsequently wish to be considered for admission into the BM guitar program may announce their wish to the faculty panelists at the endof-semester jury or board exams, which would serve as an audition for admission. Such students should make this intent very clear to their applied guitar teachers ahead of time so that they may be adequately prepared for the audition by preparing two pieces from the standard literature: a piece or movement that exhibits technical proficiency (speed) and a more sedate piece or movement in which the student's sense of lyricism and musical interpretation and phrasing are sufficiently displayed.

Performance requirements in the BM guitar program include chamber ensembles, guitar ensemble, instrumental repertoire labs each semester, and two solo recitals, a junior and a senior recital.

Students should contact the music department to request a copy of the current UNERGRADUATE BULLETIN, which provides listings of the required courses for each of the programs, along with other important information, such as financial aid, description of facilities, etc.
