The pianist speaks!
UH faculty member Thomas Rosenkranz performs the modern masterpiece “De Profundis” for speaking pianist by Frederic Rzewski with a text by Oscar Wilde, reciting tales of prison life and redemption. This program also includes Bach/Busoni’s Chaconne, Levante by the Argentinan-born composer, Osvaldo Golijov and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 57 “Appassionata”.

UH Wind Ensemble and the UH Symphonic Band present the first of two performances this semester.
The core of the University of Hawai`i Band program is its outstanding concert bands. The Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony are made up of the best instrumental musicians on campus. This internationally recognized group has twice hosted the American Bandmasters Association Conference. In addition, the Wind Ensemble has traveled to Reno, Nevada to perform at the College Band Directors National Conference in 1996. In March of 2000, the group also performed at the American Bandmasters Association Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. In March of 2004, the Wind Ensemble had a successful trip to Reno, Nevada to perform at the prestigious College Band Directors National Conference.

The first of two performances this semester, the UH Contemporary Music Ensemble will feature an all-Hawaii composer lineup. On the program is Jon Magnussen's virtuoso piano work For Patsy as well as works by UH student composers Michael Foumai and Masaki Hasebe. Also featured is Neil McKay's Soundprints, a duo for clarinet and koto, and Thomas Osborne's Songs of a Thousand Autumns, a song cycle on ancient Japanese texts scored for piano, strings and soprano. Admission is free.
