The UH Gamelan Ensemble will present a concert of music from Java and Bali using the UH Music Department’s two sets of gamelan instruments and including dances by a visiting alumna of the ensemble who has studied extensively in Java.
A gamelan is a matched set of primarily gong-chime instruments found throughout Southeast Asia. Javanese and Balinese gamelan music are both highly textured, with as many as twenty different musical parts. The sound of gamelan music can range from a delicate shimmering to a thunderous pounding, while the music created can reflect not only the stately refinement of court traditions, but the exuberant energies of village life as well. Each set of instruments is intricately carved and painted, providing a visual and aural experience unlike any other.
The concert will be presented outdoors in the UHM Music Department’s Barbara Smith Amphitheatre, but will be relocated to Orvis Auditorium in case of heavy rain.
The concert is presented by the UH Music Department and the Hawai‘i Gamelan Society.
