This program has grown out of a general persuasion that North America’s West Coast, from Los Angeles to Vancouver, deserves consideration as distinctive cultural terrain. Liberated by its relative isolation, buffered from the rest of the continent by vast mountains, multiple time zones and a disproportional lack of history, the West Coast has long been a place where dreams could be realized and selves reinvented. This program aspires to initiate new dialogue about the artists and culture of North America’s West Coast. Through their overlapping concerns and sensibilities, these works provoke us to reimagine the ways that specific social landscapes can be understood through the performing arts.

Luke Trimble holds a Bachelor of Music from Portland State University, which he received under the guidance of composer and guitarist Bryan Johanson. In 2005, he was selected as a semifinalist for the Northwest Guitar Competition and in 2007, a trio formed of Luke and fellow guitarists Jesse McCann and Mario Diaz was awarded First Prize at the University of Texas Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Competition.

The program will include:

Bryan Johanson (b.1951) Spring, Op. 1
Lou Harrison Serenade
J.S. Bach, arr. Trimble from Partita for Solo Violin No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002
Frank Zappa Waltz for Guitar
Brian Newman (b.1973) Perspectives
Harold Arlen, arr. Toru Takemitsu Over the Rainbow
