Jim Hearon

Assistant Professor of Music Technology

Jim Hearon is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and has been teaching music technology there since 2005. He came to Hawaii after working in the music industry for over ten years at Euphonix, Inc. of Palo Alto, CA and also Dolby Laboratories, Inc. of San Francisco. Jim has several years of teaching experience at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.

He is a strong improvisor on electric violin and is interested in realtime, interactive, and multimedia performance applications. Current research projects involve writing code for social research and practical applications for two and three dimensional graphical manipulations of sound as user interfaces for improvisation.

Recent multimedia works inlcude Gems, a DVD-video work featuring processed violin sounds and 3-D animation, and Above/Under, a free video interpolation of the 1967 experimental film Oben/Unten by Lutz Mommartz with a new original score.

He is also co-editor of Csound Journal, http://www.csounds.com/journal/, and recently published articles include What is Csound5?, Tour of Oscillators, The Ubiquitous Slider Demo, and A Pure Data Break Point Function Patch.

Jim has proposed new audio recording and film scoring classes at Manoa, and is trying to develop funding and support for an audio recording emphasis for the technology program. Current course offerings include: Mus240 Creative Applications of Music Technology, Mus340 Electronic Music, and Mus450 Music Technology for Teachers.
