Research interests in Bizet and his generation; the music, institutions and press in nineteenth-century France; the reception history of Berlioz; the Exposition of 1900; opera history. Publications include a dossier de presse for Carmen, editions of Bizet's music and of his letters. Author of articles and reviews in various musicological journals (such as Nineteenth-Century Music, Journal of Musicology, Journal of Musicological Research, Music and Letters, Studies in Music, Context, MLA Notes, and Current Musicology) as well as chapters in Massenet en son temps (1999) and Nazionalismo e cosmopolitanismo nell'opera fra '800 e '900 (1998), The Cambridge Companion to Berlioz (2000), Berlioz: Past, Present, Future (2002), and Berlioz, Wagner und die Deutschen (2003). Articles in the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, Viking Opera Guide, Penguin Opera Guide, Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Reader's Guide to Music and Dictionnaire de la musique en France au XIXe siecle (2003).
