What:Four-day symposium will formulate recommendations on:

  • Indigenous peoples' concerns

  • Isabella Abbott, Wilder Professor of Botany at UH, on Polynesian medicinal plants;
  • Iuley De Silva of Sri Lanka on herbal medicines in developing countries;
  • Narong Chomhalow of Thailand on production of medicinal plants in Asia;
  • Ezra Bejar of Mexico on pharmacological search for active ingredients in medicinal plants in Latin America;
  • Jim Duke of U.S. Department of Agriculture on medicinal plants as alternative crops;
  • Peggy Brevoort on the status of the U.S. botanical market;
  • Nina Etkin, UH professor of anthropology and population studies, on preserving habitats for medicinal plants and local populations.
