What:	Four-day symposium will formulate recommendations on: Medical/pharmaceutical concerns Consumer protection concerns Environmental protection concerns Indigenous peoples' concerns
Who:	Scheduled speakers include: Isabella Abbott, Wilder Professor of Botany at UH, on Polynesian medicinal plants; Iuley De Silva of Sri Lanka on herbal medicines in developing countries; Narong Chomhalow of Thailand on production of medicinal plants in Asia; Ezra Bejar of Mexico on pharmacological search for active ingredients in medicinal plants in Latin America; Jim Duke of U.S. Department of Agriculture on medicinal plants as alternative crops; Peggy Brevoort on the status of the U.S. botanical market; Nina Etkin, UH professor of anthropology and population studies, on preserving habitats for medicinal plants and local populations.
