UH Manoa Ranked Tops for Asian Pacific Americans

The University of Hawai`i at Manoa is number one among universities for Asian Pacific Americans according to a survey in the current issue of aMagazine. The magazine surveyed several hundred colleges and universities and ranked them in two major categories national universities and liberal arts colleges. Both lists include a mix of public and private institutions.

The survey compared percentages of Asian Pacific American (APA) students, faculty and administrators, overall campus diversity, academics and student life.

Among those institutions that responded to the survey, UH Manoa ranked highest in percentage of Asian Pacific American students and overall student population diversity. The Manoa campus also reported the highest percentages of APA tenured or tenure-track faculty, administrators and senior-level administrators.

Other criteria considered included availability of Asian/Asian Pacific and ethnic studies majors and minors, student retention (students returning after their freshman year), availability of student organizations that are Asian- or Asian American-specific, and percentages of scholarships and grants awarded to Asian American students.

The list of top 25 universities includes several campuses in the University of California system, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland, Cornell and Stanford universities and others across the country.

aMagazine is a national publication for and about Asian Pacific Americans. Summary survey results are in the August/September 2000 issue of the journal, with a more detailed report on the Web at www.aOnline.com.
