| CAPS workshop prepares high school students for journalism |
The Co-Curricular Activities Programs and Services (CAPS) in collaboration with Herff Jones, a yearbook design company, is conducting a workshop Aug. 11-12 for high school students interested in journalism and yearbook design. The workshop will be from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. in Hemmenway Hall on the UH Manoa campus. More than 160 high school students and their advisers from all over the state are planning to participate. They have been invited to learn about:
Adobe Pagemaker
Adobe Photoshop
Layout and Design
Copy Editing
Photojournalism
Ethics
Web site and on-line journalism
Headlines
Captions
and more
The program is designed to provide training in journalism and yearbook layout and design, which will give high school students a foundation to build on when they go to college.
The workshop will feature speakers from the Honolulu Advertiser and Star Bulletin. Jeff Portnoy, a media attorney, will also give a presentation about media ethics.
UHM student media adviser Jay Hartwell wants to recruit more students
to the campus newspaper. "We hope to provide a positive, enriching
experience so that they realize that being a student journalist can be as
good here [at UH] as any place," Hartwell said. "We plan to make
this workshop an annual event."
