Robert G. Klein stepped down from his position as Senior Associate Justice, Hawai`i State Supreme Court, this year to begin the private practice of law.
He was appointed to the high court in 1992. Justice Klein authored numerous appellate opinions involving every area of the law, notably land, tax, probate, administrative, insurance, and constitutional law.
Prior to his service on the Supreme Court, Klein served for eight years as a judge in the First Circuit Court (Honolulu) where he was at various times assigned to the Land Court, Tax Appeals Court and Probate Court. He also served as a Civil Trial Judge, Civil Motions Judge, Civil Assignments Judge, Civil Administrative judge and Criminal Trial Judge.
Klein also served from 1975-1978 as Counsel to regulatory programs of the State Department of Regulatory Agencies (now the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs), advising on all professions and vocations licensed by the state as well as the banking, insurance, cable television and public utilities industries.
During his career, Klein has been a lecturer at legal educational programs on Hawai`i and on the mainland, emphasizing land and taxation issues. He has served on numerous bench-bar committees and community boards, and was at one time nominated by U.S. Senators Inouye and Akaka to a seat on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Klein received his BA in History from Stanford University, and his law doctorate from the University of Oregon.
